2023-04-20 House Wren
I was sitting on the deck working and noticed a little birdie that seemed interested in the wren house that we had bought several years ago. We hadn’t seen any birds that seemed to be the least bit interested in it so I was quite pleased. After some research I determined that it was a House Wren which seemed fitting since it was a wren nest box. After a bit more research, I found this:
The male House Wren starts building a nest within the breeding territory even before he has a mate. The male wren builds nests in all the cavities it can find and destroys the eggs of birds of other species within its territory. The nests built by the male wren are often referred to as dummy nests since the female wren will choose only one nest among all the nests prepared by the male wren.
And this:
A House Wren weighs about as much as two quarters, but it’s a fierce competitor for nest holes. Wrens will harass and peck at much larger birds, sometimes dragging eggs and young out of a nest site they want – even occasionally killing adult birds. In some areas they are the main source of nest failure for Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, Prothonotary Warblers, and Chickadees.
Oh no! We have an active bluebird nest. I sure hope it leaves them alone.
